On Wednesday, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Indian Independence Party (IN.D.I.A.) will tighten their grip in the Parliament, with both parties set to establish their candidate for Lok Sabha Speaker. The election to elect the next Chairman will be held today. In the absence of a decision on the appointment of the Lok Sabha speaker, the government and opposition parties agreed to hold elections, a rare move in parliament. In most cases, the Chairman is appointed by consensus without voting. The NDA fielded BJP MP Om Birla, who is seeking a second term as Lok Sabha Speaker, while the opposition party I.N.D.I.A is fighting against Congress MP K Suresh.

A day before the Lok Sabha Speaker’s election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) issued three strikes to its MPs, asking them to remain in the House from 11 a.m. Wednesday morning. The Congress party, on the other hand, also issued a three-line ban to MPs asking them to attend the Lok Sabha session on Wednesday at 11 am. According to the Constitution of India, the post of Speaker remains vacant until the first session of the newly elected Lok Sabha. At the same time, the president appointed a chairman for the first time to handle the first steps, including the swearing-in of new lawmakers. Next, the Lok Sabha elects a new Speaker by majority vote.
