The government has stepped up efforts to protect citizens in response to reports of fraud involving mobile phone numbers in electronic update KYC scams.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) used the ‘Chakshu’ portal to report and analyze fraud, and first identified five suspected cases.

The portal’s AI analysis found that 392 mobile phones linked to 31,740 phone numbers were involved in the fraud.

In addition, the Department of Defense has ordered mobile service providers (TSPs) to intercept 392 IMEI mobile phones that are being misused for online activity and money laundering.

TSP also ordered to verify 31,740 mobile connections connected to the telecom. “Failure to re-verify will result in immediate disconnection of the account number and banning of the concerned handset,” the Department of Transportation said.

According to the government, vigilant citizens have reported the suspected fake communications through the ‘Report Suspicious Chakshu Fraudulent Communications’ facility on the Transport Ministry’s Sanchar Saathi portal.

This will help the Department of Communications to fight and prevent cyber and money laundering.

“Citizens have reported cases of fraudsters using SMS and WhatsApp messages for electronic KYC updates and malicious APK files to manipulate and control victims’ devices,” the agency said. .

This step demonstrates the Department of Communications’ commitment to improving mobile network security and protecting the public from digital fraud.
